Where We Come From

Linthwaite is a village in the Colne Valley, four miles south west of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire. It is 20 miles from Manchester and the same distance from Leeds.

You may have seen the Colne Valley on television. Much of the long running BBC comedy series “Last of the Summer Wine” is filmed here; indeed, we have twice appeared as extras in the series. The ITV drama series, “Where the Heart Is” was filmed here, with the fictional “Skelthwaite” being a combination of Slaithwaite and Marsden in the Colne Valley, and Meltham in the neighboring Holme Valley.

The Colne Valley is at the centre of the most ambitious canal restoration project in Great Britain. A twenty mile stretch of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, closed in the 1950s, has recently been restored to navigation. This project, completed in 2001, includes the longest (at 3 miles) and highest canal tunnel in the country.
